Memorial Day Weekend Sets Off Busy Week for Border Patrol

Edinburg, Texas – Border Patrol agents assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Sector kicked off the last seven days with Memorial Day Weekend and ended the time period on Thursday with seizures totaling over 20,600 pounds of marijuana valued at approximately $16.5 million.

Starting with Memorial Day Weekend on May 28, agents seized more than 10 tons of marijuana over the past seven days.

More than 20,000 pounds of marijuana was seized by RGV agents between May 28 and June 3.

Rio Grande Valley agents seized more than $17.5 million worth of contraband during the week surrounding Memorial Day.

The totals are a result of multiple seizures that occurred throughout the sector form Brownsville to Rio Grande City and at the checkpoints in Falfurrias and Sarita. In addition to the seizures of marijuana was more than 33 pounds of cocaine, bringing the total value of the seizures to over $17.5 million.

“These totals speak volumes for the hard work of the agents on the front line and manning our checkpoints,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Eligio Pena. “These seizures don’t just happen, our agents are being pro-active and aggressively working to secure our nation’s border.”
